Glossary of Distance Learning Terms

  • Learning Management System (LMS) - an online platform used to enhance the learning process. It stores and organizes data; creates a digital learning experience, aids teachers in the teaching and delivery of content and students in the learning process, including handing in assignments. LMS’ also organize attendance records, grades, report cards, curricula, and eLearning coursework. 
  • Asynchronous Learning - this form of learning is not delivered in person or real-time, but allows students to access information on their own, demonstrate what they’ve learned, and communicate with instructors in their own time. 
  • Synchronous Learning - learning that happens in real-time, meaning the teacher and students interact and engage virtual at the same time. Also called “live teaching” – requires attendance at scheduled times.
