The Redwood Day PGA Book Fair

Monday, January 30 to Friday, February 3, 2023
Our annual PGA Book Fair is a cherished Redwood Day tradition. For one week, the Library and Gallery will transform into a pop-up bookstore serving our book-loving community. The Book Fair provides an opportunity for parents and guardians to foster our students’ enthusiasm for books, as well as a chance to buy books for family, friends, teachers, the Redwood Day library, classroom collections, and Oakland public school students. We are proud to offer books for all ages, including a well-curated selection of fiction and non-fiction for adults and teens, in addition to a substantial assortment of wonderful picture books, early readers, chapter books, graphic novels, and more for kids.

Students can shop during the school day with their class, during recess, and after school. Parents, guardians, and guests are welcome to shop during all Book Fair hours.

For those who prefer to shop online or want to share the Book Fair with friends and family, we can shop at Books Inc.’s online store using a special Redwood Day code. The purchase will be counted toward our Book Fair proceeds by using the coupon code REDWOODDAY at checkout when shopping at www.booksinc.net between January 30 - February 6.

While the primary purpose of the Redwood Day Book Fair is to promote literacy, the love of books, and reading in our community, we also raise money for our school and our partner organization, Temple Sinai's People of the Book Literacy Project.

Please join us for one of Redwood Day's most beloved events!

FAQ

List of 9 frequently asked questions.

  • Q: What kind of books will I find at the Book Fair?

Books of all kinds! We are proud to offer an amazing selection, including a huge assortment of great children’s books for young readers but also cookbooks, adult fiction and non-fiction, graphic novels, and young adult books, as well as books from amazing authors who are part of our own community. The Book Fair is a great time for gift shopping.
  • Q: Who is invited to the Book Fair? Where is it?

Redwood Day students, parents, guardians, staff, and our families and friends are invited to visit the Book Fair on campus. The Book Fair will be back in its original location: the Library and Gallery! Everyone is invited to shop anytime during the fair hours (see below). Consider it a pop-up bookstore for our entire community!

Everyone in our community is also invited to shop online, so please spread the word to friends, neighbors, family members, and others who might not be able to get to the fair. They can all enjoy shopping virtually while supporting Redwood Day. We have books for readers of all ages and interests.

  • Q: How can my child buy books at the Book Fair?

The easiest way for students to purchase books is by using a prepaid student account you have created for them. Alternatively, they can bring in cash, or you can purchase books when you shop with them. Older students may opt to use Apple or Samsung Pay on their phones when shopping after school.

You can set up a student account online HERE and put money in for your child(ren) to use. The idea is that they can have a budget to spend at the Book Fair, so they don't need to bring cash to school. Any remainder from student accounts at the end of the week can be used by you; otherwise, they are donated to the library. The committee will do our best to ensure students use as much of their account money as possible.

Please be aware that student accounts must be set up by January 22.
  • Q: How much should I give my child for books?

This is obviously a personal decision to make for your own family. However, this guide to typical children’s book prices might be helpful to consider when setting up your child’s student account:
    • Picture books - $20 to $22, including tax
    • Hardbound books - $12 to $20, including tax
    • Paperbound books - start at $5.50 but average $9 to $14.20, including tax
    • Graphic novels - $12 to $14.20, including tax
  • Q: May I buy a gift certificate for a Redwood Day faculty/staff member, another parent/guardian, or a student who is not my child?

Of course! A gift certificate is an excellent way to show appreciation for a Redwood Day community member. Click HERE to purchase a gift certificate. A physical gift certificate will be printed, personalized, and delivered to the recipient at Redwood Day the week before the Book Fair so that they can redeem it for books at the Fair.
  • Q: What is a Classroom, Library, or Student Wish List?

Redwood Day teachers and staff are encouraged to make Wish Lists to guide families who want to donate books for specific school classrooms, or to the teachers personally. These books will be displayed at the fair and arranged by classroom--no need to search yourself.

Similarly, if you would like to purchase books for the Redwood Day Library collection, look for suggestions on the table display near the cash registers.

Students will also have the option to bring home a Wish List if there are additional books they’d like you to consider purchasing for them.
  • Q: What is the virtual Book Fair coupon code?

We are pleased to offer the opportunity for online shopping again at Books Inc. Sales using our special coupon code will support Redwood Day just like buying on location during the Book Fair does. You can use the code REDWOODDAY during the week of January 30 - February 6 ONLY when you purchase books from the Books Inc. online store at www.booksinc.net. Please feel free to share the code with other members of your community! This is also a great way for you to shop for any books that you and/or your student(s) didn’t get at the in-person fair.
  • Q: What is BookShare?

Redwood Day partners with Temple Sinai's People of the Book Literacy Project to provide books for Oakland's public school children. Last year we raised an incredible $2,012 for the project!! We will be collecting both money and paperback books during the week. You can make a donation to BookShare when you set up a student account or purchase a gift certificate, and you can purchase paperback books at the fair to donate directly to the project. Used books will not be accepted.
  • Q: What is Book Beat?

Book Beat is a special event for Middle School students and their families. This fun Middle School event featuring music and performances takes place on Wednesday, February 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Gym. On that evening, the Book Fair will remain open until 8 p.m., so even if you don’t have a middle schooler, you might find Wednesday night is a good opportunity for some leisurely evening shopping.
