Welcome to Middle School!

by Karina Momary, Interim Middle School Director
Dear Middle School Families,

I am incredibly excited to be joining the Redwood Day community and to be starting the 2020-2021 school year with you. While this school year may look a little different, I am confident that we can work together to create a positive learning environment that honors and strengthens our students in the Redwood Day community. I feel very fortunate to be part of this vibrant community and to support the students during this unique school year.

Redwood Day teachers and staff have been working to prepare for our start to the year in distance learning with RDConnects@Home as well as the anticipated return to in-person learning on campus. Our technology and facility teams have been working throughout the summer to restructure our classrooms and add new technology to enhance the virtual learning experience and prepare for learning pods. Many teachers and staff have engaged in professional development throughout the summer in order to strengthen their knowledge of online learning and pedagogy. In addition, the faculty and staff will be attending a professional development prior to the school year focusing on Trauma Informed Practices to best support our students during these challenging times.

Prior to joining Redwood Day, I served as a middle school teacher at The Harker School in San Jose and the Director of Student Life at Stanford University Online High School. In addition to these roles, I have held various director roles at summer programs for middle and high school students at Gonzaga, Georgetown, and Stanford. I have also served as a lecturer in the Communication Studies Department at San Jose State. I recently completed my Doctorate in Education at the University of Southern California in Organizational Change and Leadership. My dissertation research focused on student sense of belonging and community at an online school. Although I have always felt at home in the classroom, I have enjoyed serving as an independent school administrator. This role provides me the opportunity to work collaboratively with teachers while also remain connected to the students and their educational journey. I am thrilled to bring my skills and experience as an educational leader to Redwood Day and to work with you as a partner in education to ensure your student’s success.

I look forward to getting the opportunity to meet and learn more about you and your family. While we may not have the traditional opportunities to meet in-person at the start of the year, I hope to see you at the virtual Parent Q&As and future zoom events. Please keep an eye out for communication from me on future digital coffees and meetings.

My conversations with teachers and staff over the last few weeks have shown a glimpse into the passionate enactment of the core mission and values of the school. I hope to continue the strong traditions at Redwood Day and am committed to meeting the needs of our students during these times. I look forward to further opportunities to partner with and communicate effectively with parents/guardians and community members. Please know that I welcome the opportunity to connect with you and value your positive input throughout the year.

Sincerely,
Karina Momary
