Redwood Day is one of a growing number of schools across the globe participating in the 30 year old SEED Project, founded by Peggy McIntosh, at the Wellesley Centers for Women. SEED participants seek to examine our own lives/backgrounds and to learn about others in order to create a community where all members are supported and valued. Participants engage in activities, readings, and films that focus on diversity and connection. Learning more about ourselves and listening to each other helps create and support a more balanced, equitable, inclusive and understanding community. SEED is open to all Redwood Day faculty/staff and is co-facilitated by Alyson Kaneshiro, Learning Specialist and Nick Obando, Lower School Music Teacher. Equity and Inclusion Groups provide space for intentional conversations focused on identity, diversity, equity and inclusivity for grades K-8 through activities, literature and media. We introduce vocabulary and community norms, providing shared language and expectations for participants. Equity and Inclusion groups offer students a chance to build community in and outside of their regular classrooms.
School-wide assemblies provide an incredible opportunity for our K-8 community to gather to educate, celebrate and entertain. Performances may include class presentations, solo and group performances by faculty, staff, and students, as well as professional performances. Performing students are embodying healthy risk-taking and the community actively supports these endeavors. Every assembly closes with honoring, a time in which individuals recognize members of the community who have made a (small or big) difference in their lives.
