LOWER SCHOOL

PREPARING FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL

Transitioning to middle school is an exciting time of growth, independence, and discovery. At Redwood Day, we understand that this shift comes with both anticipation and questions—from students and families alike.

Our program is thoughtfully designed to support this transition academically, socially, and emotionally, helping each student gain confidence as they step into a new chapter of their educational journey.

Academic Readiness

Middle school students are challenged with increased academic rigor, greater personal responsibility, and more complex thinking across subjects. Our curriculum builds upon foundational skills while introducing students to abstract reasoning, independent research, interdisciplinary learning, and collaborative projects. Students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and engage deeply with their studies.

Executive Function and Organization

We support students in developing the tools they need to stay organized and manage their time effectively. From digital platforms to planner use and teacher check-ins, our program helps students take ownership of their learning while receiving the guidance they need to succeed.

Social and Emotional Growth

Middle school is a time of identity formation, emotional development, and increased social awareness. Through advisory, restorative practices, and inclusive classroom discussions, we help students navigate friendships, set personal goals, and reflect on their role in the larger community. Our educators foster a space where students feel seen, valued, and empowered to speak up.

Leadership and Voice

We believe middle schoolers thrive when given authentic opportunities to lead. Whether through student council, affinity spaces, service learning, or speaking at all-school assemblies, students begin to discover and use their voice. We encourage risk-taking, celebrate individuality, and help students develop the resilience to grow through challenges.

Family Partnership

We know that strong partnerships with families are key to student success. Through regular communication, parent education events, and conferences, we keep families informed and involved. Our faculty and staff are here to support students and their families every step of the way.
