MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS

Middle School Athletics Welcome

Welcome to the 2026-2027 school year here at Redwood Day! My name is Todd Petersen, and I am the Athletic Director and 7/8th Grade PE Teacher. We have an incredible group of coaches that are here to help develop your student-athletes both athletically and social-emotionally.

The Redwood Day Athletics Program promotes the social, emotional, and physical well-being of our student-athletes while fostering a strong sense of community and belonging. Students of all abilities are encouraged to participate, have fun, and challenge themselves in an environment that emphasizes commitment, integrity, self-discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

Most middle school students at Redwood Day participate on one or more interscholastic teams, and we encourage every student to try out for at least one of our many athletic offerings. No prior playing experience is required, and most teams are co-ed. We strive to provide meaningful opportunities for every student to participate at an appropriate level of competition based on their grade, experience, and skill level.

We are excited to announce our Fall athletic offerings:

Cross Country • Co-Ed Varsity Flag Football • Co-Ed JV Flag Football • Co-Ed Soccer • Pickleball

FALL SEASON PRACTICE SCHEDULE (Aug 31-Nov. 13)

Athletic Team Tryout Information:
  • Student athletes interested in playing a fall sport should attend at least 1 tryout session. It is always great if you are able to attend both sessions but if you cannot attend both, it has no negative impact on your standing with the team.
  • Student-athletes should bring a full water bottle and wear athletic clothing as well as appropriate footwear. We recommend not to buy cleats for football or soccer until your child is certain that they want to play on the team.
  • Students can try out for more than one team but will need to select only one team on which to play.
  • When tryouts conclude, emails will be sent out welcoming student-athletes to their team. We will also send out Teamsnap invitations to parents/guardians. Teamsnap will be our team management platform and the hub for information, schedules, rosters, and any updates.
  • All student-athletes must sign in to X-care before they head to tryouts or practice. There is no charge for this.

If your student is a 6th, 7th, or 8th grader interested in trying out for a team, please click the appropriate link to complete the form.

IMPORTANT: All parent/guardian drivers must park in the parking lot to pick up your child at the conclusion of their tryout or practice. Please do not park on Sheffield to wait for your student athlete to come to your car.
As mentioned above, all students are encouraged to join a team. Students can try out for more than one team but may only play one sport per season. Each team usually meets twice a week in the form of two practices or a game and a practice. Redwood Day participates in a league with 14 other independent and public middle schools in the East Bay. We look to schedule 6-10 contests per season of sport for each team. Typically, games/meets start at 4:00 pm and are an hour to 1-1/2 hours in length. Approximately half of the games are hosted here on campus. We look for parents/guardians to help carpool our athletes to away games.
If you are willing and able to volunteer to be a driver for athletic events that will take place away from Redwood Day, please fill out the 2026-27 Driver Authorization Form.
