At Redwood Day, Middle School students embrace new challenges, forge meaningful connections, and grow into confident leaders. Whether new to our school in 6th grade or continuing their experience, every student discovers who they are and what they can achieve—both now and in the future.
Through hands-on learning, community engagement, and leadership opportunities, students discover new passions, connect with those around them, grow in confidence and self-awareness, and lead with empathy and purpose. Middle Schoolers don’t just prepare for what’s next; they shape the world around them.
Academic Exploration
Middle School at Redwood Day is all about discovering passions through hands-on, interdisciplinary learning. Signature projects in each grade level weave together subjects in meaningful ways. Whether stepping into history at the Automated Wax Museum or exploring identity in the 7th-grade Remembrance Project, students think critically, make connections, and bring their learning to life. With specialist classes in art, design and innovation, drama, music, and physical education, every student has the chance to explore, express, and shine.

Connecting Beyond the Classroom: Oakland thRoughout CalifoRnia
Middle School learning at Redwood Day extends far beyond the classroom. Through Outdoor Education trips, students build connections, strengthen teamwork, and challenge themselves in new environments. Whether hiking, camping, or problem-solving in nature, these shared experiences create lasting bonds. Closer to home, students engage with Oakland as an extension of their learning—exploring local history, environmental stewardship, and community partnerships that bring their studies to life. From the redwoods to the streets of Oakland to the underwater kelp forests of Catalina Island, Middle Schoolers connect with each other and the world around them in meaningful ways.
Social, Emotional, and Academic GRowth
At Redwood Day, we believe success isn’t just about skills—it’s about confidence, resilience, and well-being. Middle Schoolers grow academically, socially, and emotionally with the support of two deans, a counselor, the Director of Student Life, and the Director of Equity and Belonging. In a community that values both learning and personal growth, students navigate the ups and downs of adolescence with care and guidance. Through advisory groups and SEL workshops, they embrace differences, build strong relationships, and develop the confidence to take on new challenges with empathy and self-awareness.

READY FOR High School
We make sure students are ready for whatever comes next. With expert guidance from the Director of High School Placement, students build the skills, confidence, and self-awareness to find the right fit. And they don’t do it alone—alumni often return to share their journeys, showing just how far a Redwood Day education can take you.
