8th Grade Advanced Topics: Mastery and Momentum
Eighth grade is the powerful pivot point where students transition from foundational learning to specialized inquiry. Our Advanced Topics Courses drive this shift, allowing students to explore a high-school-style elective model.

Oakland as a Classroom: Learning Without Walls - the City as Our Classroom
Our signature Oakland as a Classroom program transforms the entire city and the Bay Area into a living laboratory for real-world discovery. We break down the traditional "school walls," sending students into our vibrant community for meaningful, hands-on experiences that cultivate empathy and advocacy. For our students, learning truly moves beyond the classroom to inspire a deep appreciation for the region we call home.
The program evolves across every grade level, from foundational service-learning projects in Lower School to student-led grants in Middle School that directly fund local causes. The journey culminates in 8th grade with mini-internships and professional shadowing alongside Oakland’s civic, business, and nonprofit leaders, empowering students to investigate, iterate, and innovate for the heartbeat of our city.
The city of Oakland is woven directly into our curriculum. Through immersive residency programs and key partnerships, our campus becomes a creative hub featuring local innovators and leaders. Game On: Microsports at Redwood Day
Athletics build commitment, integrity, and teamwork. Our Microsports Academy is where Lower School students (Grades 3-5) step into structured, fun competition, a perfect bridge to Middle School sports.
More than a class, this six-week program is a journey of self-discovery and personal development designed to elevate young athletes' skills while ensuring they have a blast.

At Redwood Day, we believe that for a community to be truly inclusive, every member must be seen, heard, and valued. Our Equity and Inclusion (E&I) program is a cornerstone of our K-8 curriculum, designed to foster the intellectual and emotional courage students need to make the world a more just place.
Our program features a dedicated scope and sequence that evolves with each student. From Kindergarten through 8th grade, students engage in Equity and Inclusion Groups that meet ten times throughout the year for intentional discussions on identity, ability, class, gender, and race.
