WELCOME TO REDWOOD DAY

LOWER SCHOOL

Curiosity, connection, and growth come together in Lower School to inspire a lifelong love of learning. Our youngest learners gain confidence and independence through hands-on academics, meaningful relationships, and an environment that sparks curiosity and fuels a sense of wonder.
Every day offers new opportunities to explore, discover, and ignite a passion for learning.

Throughout their Lower School journey, students experience a balance of structured and inquiry-based instruction with playful exploration and recreation, guided by expert teachers who understand the needs of today's young minds. Supported by a caring community of teachers, parents, and peers, our students build the skills and resilience to thrive during their Lower School years and beyond.

Why RD Lower School?

Hands-On Exploration & Subject Integation

Curiosity comes to life in Lower School through hands-on learning and subject integration. Whether exploring the world of animals, designing a STEAM Fair project, or blending storytelling with art, students make connections across subjects in engaging and creative ways. Every day is an opportunity to experiment, create, and discover something new.

FRom Garden to Table:
LeaRning in Action

Our beautiful garden, fully equipped kitchen, and chicken coop provide rich opportunities for hands-on learning. Through the garden-to-table experience, students explore science, math, and sustainability by planting, harvesting, and preparing food. They learn about ecosystems, measurements, and the importance of sustainable practices, all while understanding the journey from soil to plate. By caring for the garden, gathering ingredients, and working together in the kitchen, students develop practical skills that connect them to the environment and the food they eat.

A Playground Like No Other

Lower School recess is anything but ordinary. From climbing The Tower to soaring down slides and tackling log steps, every part of the playground sparks excitement and exploration. Swings soar, hula hoops spin and laughter fills the air in a space designed for exploration and creativity. Nestled in the beautiful backdrop of redwoods, our playground also features a tinker space with water play, offering endless possibilities for imaginative fun.

Relationships That Shape the LoweR School Experience

Relationships are at the heart of the Lower School experience. Through Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons, shared playground time, and collaborative classroom activities, students develop empathy, teamwork, and strong connections with their peers and teachers. Beyond the school day, the home-school partnership creates strong bonds between parents, teachers, and the school, fostering collaboration that supports each child’s unique journey and success.

Coming TogetheR Through ShaRed Moments

Connections are woven into every moment of the school day. From classrooms to the playground, each day is filled with opportunities to share and connect. Assemblies bring students together for performances, guest speakers, and shared learning moments, fostering a sense of unity and connection across grade levels. Our Buddy Families bring students, teachers, and staff together in multi-age groups, encouraging mentorship, connection, and school-wide community spirit.

GRowing with Support and EncouRagement

Students thrive when they feel seen, supported, and encouraged. At Redwood Day, teachers understand each child’s unique needs, creating a nurturing environment where curiosity is sparked and learning feels meaningful. With guidance and encouragement from caring educators and a strong sense of community, students actively engage with their learning, empowered to explore and reach new heights.

Growing with Confidence and Independence

At Redwood Day, students tackle challenges, take risks, and discover their capabilities in a supportive environment. Teachers design experiences within the Optimal Learning Zone (OLZ), where students are challenged just enough to stay engaged and motivated while receiving the support they need to succeed. Whether solving a tricky problem or refining a creative project, students are encouraged to ask questions,  take initiative, and grow from every experience.
