THIS IS REDWOOD DAY

MISSION & VALUES

MISSION

Redwood Day inspires students to reach for their next challenge, embrace differences, and develop the intellectual and emotional courage to be ready for anything.

PROFILE

We're a K-8, coeducational, independent school located on 4 acres in the heart of Oakland, California. Since 1963, Redwood Day has transformed from a tiny school of twelve students into the thriving community we are today. We are a nonprofit corporation directed by a Board of Trustees.

DIVERSITY

Diversity is an essential element of education at Redwood Day. Over half of our students identify as being students of color, and about 35% identify as white. Our community includes families with a wide variety of economic experiences and is made up of LGBTQ+, heterosexual, adoptive, and biological families, as well as families with single or multiple households or parents.

We support and guide our students to become well-informed individuals who care about their community, understand the power and complexities of diverse perspectives, are empathetic and compassionate, and are able to navigate our global society. A diverse faculty, staff, and student body encourages us all to deepen our understanding of ourselves and others.

We are committed to enrolling students of diverse geographic, economic, religious, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. In our admission process, we strive to build a diverse learning community that includes all of these factors, as well as a breadth of learning styles.

Redwood Day attracts families from all over the East Bay area. While a majority of our families live in Oakland, we have many families from Berkeley, Alameda, San Leandro, Piedmont, Hayward, El Cerrito, Richmond, Albany, and Contra Costa County.

VALUES

RESPECT

Our students and staff embody respect by valuing themselves and others. They celebrate differences, support and uplift one another, and care for our campus and the environment, fostering a community where everyone feels valued.

KINDNESS

Kindness is at the heart of daily life at Redwood Day. Students learn to be thoughtful and courteous, offer and ask for help, and share generously, creating a culture of patience and care in every interaction.

HONESTY

Students are guided to tell the truth, take accountability for their actions, and admit mistakes, helping them build trust and integrity in their relationships.

INCLUSION

Inclusion is central to our values at Redwood Day. Students practice using everyone’s names and pronouns, caring for others, learning about others’ experiences, and creating a welcoming space where everyone belongs and feels supported.

COURAGE

Our students are encouraged to embrace courage by advocating for themselves and others, taking risks, and standing up for what is right. They are taught to be upstanders and to face challenges with a growth mindset.

EMPATHY

Empathy is nurtured through active listening and understanding. Students learn to care about others’ feelings and perspectives, fostering meaningful connections and a sense of shared community.

RESPONSIBILITY

Our students are taught to take responsibility for their actions, keep themselves and others safe, and own and repair their mistakes. They learn to be dependable and thoughtful in their choices.
