Students Speak
Our Middle School students are some of our very best spokespeople -- capable, confident, with diverse interests and talents, and real insights into their personal learning styles. Click on the photographs in the sidebar to read their own reflections on the Redwood Day School experience.
Developmentally, middle school students are beginning to think in abstract terms. As they enter sixth grade, many are challenged just to manage their daily and long-term assignments. Starting with time management strategies and organization, RDS Middle School students hone skills that prepare them for the college preparatory high schools they will attend. Students complete complex projects that require integrated writing, mathematics, research, analysis, technology, and project management.
Middle School students are assigned to advisory groups of 9-12 students from the same grade level, with one faculty member. These groups meet twice a week to explore personal, school, community, and world issues. This forum allows students, in an emotionally safe environment, to work through issues of concern. Advisors give regular attention to checking student planners, monitoring academic priorities, and supporting student organization, time management, and academic projects.
Outdoor education focuses on environmental studies, team building, and community service in the Middle School. Outdoor education trips take place in each grade in the spring, culminating in the eighth-grade marine biology study trip to Catalina Island.
RDS students are well prepared for and accepted into excellent independent high schools throughout the Bay Area. Our graduates have mastered core academics, developed interdisciplinary learning and project development skills, have good study habits, and understand how they learn most effectively so they can thrive confidently in high school.
