Once Upon A Time...
by Liz Price Patel, Head Librarian
Once upon a time, in a magical (and not so far away) land, there lived a band of noble readers who worked tirelessly to bring their passion for books to the children of the realm. Each year, when the wind started blowing cold and the redwoods stood majestic, over the landscape, the children were full of excitement for the coming weeks – holidays, family visits, author talks, bookmark contests, and the transformation of their school into a wonderland of books - where adventure awaits on every page.
This year’s PGA Book Fair begins on December 5 at 3 p.m. and ends on December 9 at noon. Once Upon a Redwood is a time to celebrate and promote the love of books and reading in our community and to share the gift of reading with others. The fair raises funds to support Redwood Day. Each year, generous book donations benefit our classrooms and library. And through BookShare, we also provide books and monetary donations to support local school libraries.
The fair itself will include daytime and evening shopping hours for a wide selection of books for all ages from local, independent book seller, Books Inc.; K-8 class visits; guest author speakers; open shopping hours for students during breaks; and the BookBeat middle school event. You can also pick up some delicious holiday gifts at our Friday Coffee, featuring Blue Chair Jam with Rachel Saunders. Click HERE for more Book Fair details, student accounts, and related events.
We are honored to host four authors in conjunction with the Bbook Fair this year: Mac Barnett (author of several award-winning picture and chapter books), who visited the Lower School in November; Bethany Hegedus (Grandfather Ghandi and Be the Change) who worked with K-4 classes on December 1; Kate Schatz, author of Rad American Women A-Z and Rad Women Worldwide, who will be speaking to 5th-8th graders on December 5; and Amanda Conran, author of The Lost Celt, who will join us for BookBeat.
The celebration of reading began in early November with the annual bookmark contest. We would like to honor the many children who participated. Congratulations to the following students who will have their artwork printed on bookmarks for the whole school:
