AFTER-SCHOOL ENRICHMENT CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

MONDAYS (January 28-April 29)

Drawing & Cartooning w/Ruth Boerefijn for Grades 1-5

The Drawing and Cartooning class is a place where we tell our stories through pictures. Our stories come alive as we draw – it is all in the process. We talk about what our characters are thinking and saying; what they are feeling and how each one is responding to the given situation. Whatever the students’ interests, my goal is to support their exploration and progress. There is no lesson plan. Each artist follows his or her own thread and I am in the background ready to work with each person as needed. All materials are provided.

Time: 3:45 - 4:45 PM
Location: LS Art

Try ‘Em All: Intro to Dance w/Hannah Cleveland for Grades 1-3

(NOTE: this class will function on a one-week delayed schedule, from February 4 through May 6 with all “no class” dates remaining the same)

Students will be exposed to a variety of dance styles. Students’ interests will drive the styles chosen and time spent on each style. Possible styles include: ballet, ballroom dancing, hip-hop, improvisation, jazz, line dancing, lyrical/modern, partner dancing and tap. Classes will begin each week with a warm-up consisting of stretching and basic movements that come from that day’s particular style of dance. Students will then move into short dance progressions that combine movements together. Finally, students will learn combinations that will be expanded upon each week to boost long-term memorization of routines and encourage practice outside of class. Students will also receive a basic history or background on each style of dance studied.
