Middle School Assembly: "Nightmare on Puberty Street"

On Tuesday, January 9, the middle school (grades 6-8) was treated to a very special assembly titled, Nightmare on Puberty Street, put on by the Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre Company.

This performance helps students navigate through adolescence and wrestle with the age-old question, “Am I normal?” Some of the takeaways for students were:
  • How to resist and overcome negative peer pressure
  • How to cope with depression and thoughts of suicide
  • That the changes occurring during puberty and early adolescence are a normal part of development
  • The importance of seeking help from a trusted adult when going through a stressful or difficult situation
  • How community resources can help them get through stressful and difficult situations
The magic of theatre for discussing these sometimes sensitive and important issues brought to life many of the issues discussed in Redwood Day’s comprehensive health education program. The middle school students were laughing and listening to many of the issues that they encounter daily. Through characters that portrayed many of the issues young and middle adolescent students encounter, students were able to see and experience many of issues that are covered in sixth through eighth grade health classes.
