growing up green FAQs

What do we start the seeds in?
Old nursery six packs, old plastic pots, used yogurt containers with holes punched in the bottoms, anything that a seedling can get a good start in.

What kind of seeds should I use?
The kinds of seeds grown will depend on: where you live (west coast, east coast, in-land or costal), what season it is and how well the seedlings handle being transplanted.

Who do you give the seedlings to?
Work with Community Garden Coordinators, schools, neighborhood associations and anyone else who might want seedlings to start a garden!

How do I request seedlings?
Contact Growing Up G.R.E.E.N. through the Redwood Day School Website rdschool.org.  Let us know your name, the name of your organization and any contact information you can (phone number and e-mail)

How many seedlings do I get?
We begin growing seedlings at the beginning of each school year and keep on planting and donating throughout the school year.  We usually have several hundred seedlings growing at a time.  We like to be able to share with as many  people as possible. We hope to be able to supply 48 seedlings or more at a time.

Is Growing Up G.R.E.E.N. a club?
Growing Up G.R.E.E.N. is not a club.  It’s people who are starting seeds to share as seedlings and helping others to learn to do the same. It is a seed for a seed sharing program.

How can I join in?
Anyone, anywhere can join in Growing Up G.R.E.E.N. simply by learning to plant their excess seeds to share with others.  The trick is planting the right seeds for the season and planting ones that can be successfully transplanted. The Redwood Day School, Growing Up G.R.E.E.N. web page will host helpful hints on starting seedlings, caring for them and how to find others to give them to.

Thank you so much.
