Lower School Computer Learning
Thelma Lancaster, Lower School Computer Teacher
How do you capture the flavor of thousands of files of student work created in Lower School computer class over the course of the year? From beginning mouse skills in kindergarten to advanced research and media work in fifth grade, the Lower School technology curriculum follows a careful developmental arc and is always tied closely to classroom themes of study. Technology is presented as a tool for learning - a fabulous, multi-pronged Swiss Army-type tool, perhaps -- not an end in itself. Thelma Lancaster's movie and narration give a great overview of this year's learning and impart a strong sense of the flow of technology curriculum in the Lower School computer lab. "It was quite illuminating for me to put together the movie, watching the progression of student skills. The teaching of technology is not linear, especially when kept tightly integrated to core teacher subject matter," Thelma notes. "Does exposure to many different applications, with a constant background hum of articulating learning styles develop a visible path of education in the sand? Hopefully, the movie shows some of the footprints on that path."
