Arts
RDS believes in a balanced education. An integral part of this philosophy means that we provide an excellent arts program that allows children to explore opportunities to express themselves creatively.
The drama program in the Middle School covers a wide range of areas: from public speaking and improvisation to Shakespeare and scene work; from comedy and tragedy to realism and the abstract. Students learn about many different forms of theatre and have many opportunities to perform, write, and create their own work. Outside the classroom, RDS offers up to two Middle School productions a year: a play in the fall and a musical in the spring.
In our art studio, children deepen their mastery of drawing, painting, and crafts through line and color. Three-dimensional design is explored with foam, clay, and papier-mâché. Students learn the importance of composition and presentation. Art history is also incorporated into this comprehensive program.
Musically, our students are given a variety of options to succeed. Every student has music class twice a week, but many want to extend their opportunities and join the rock band, jazz band, chorus groups, or a variety of instrumental groups which include strings or wind instruments.
At RDS, traditional music theory curriculum is complemented by critical listening covering many periods and styles, in-depth study of the history and cultural context of specific music, and instrumental/vocal performance. Students study guitar so they can accompany themselves and write songs. Group singing is another cornerstone of the curriculum, with emphasis on vocal technique, blend, interpretation, and performance practice.
