Native American Heritage Month

November is set aside as Native American Heritage Month, bringing awareness not only to the history of American Indians, but also to their consistent contributions to our country and the world. It is important to me, as the Librarian, that our students know that this is a living culture and not just a piece of history.

The RDS Library's collection of Native American fiction and nonfiction is abundant. We have agrowing selection of picture books and chapter books written by Native American authors, featuring contemporary American Indian children and families. We have also just purchased a brand new set of nonfiction books, each featuring individual tribes from all over the US. What I particularly like about these books is that they don't generalize information, they honor the variety and individuality specific to each tribe, allowing the reader to really understand diversity within a culture. We also have number of books that address the history, myths, and left out truths surrounding Thanksgiving. Whatever your needs, interests, curiosities are please don't hesitate to stop by and ask any of us for assistance. We are happy to help and in fact look forward to it!
