Celebrate Banned Books Week
In the Helen Dittmer Library, we believe in freedom of choice and are lucky to have the first amendment protecting this right for us. However, in many libraries and schools across the nation books are being quietly locked away in closets or removed from classrooms, because some object to their content. The American Library Association works hard to document these challenges and bannings, so that the public is aware and given space to make their own choices.

During ALA's Annual Banned Books Week, RDS students are encouraged to read books that have been banned or challenged for various reasons, think critically about those reasons and decide for themselves if they agree or disagree. Some students go above and beyond, completing thoughtful book reviews and expressing their opinions on banned books. So come on by the Library and check out some of the books that have been challenged and/or banned across the nation. You might be surprised at the books on the list!
