Emergency Preparedness
Located near the Hayward Fault as we are, Redwood Day has taken strong proactive steps in its emergency preparedness work. In addition to regular drills (fire, earthquake, and shelter-in-place) and emergency backpacks in each classroom, we also have large storage containers in the back parking lot that contain 72-hours worth of first aid supplies, water, food, toiletries, search and rescue supplies, extra copies of emergency contact details, and more. These supplies were reviewed by outside consultants in 2011 and updated per their recommendations. It is our intention to have enough supplies on hand to provide 72 hours of around-the-clock basic care, food, and water for the entire student body, faculty, and staff in case of a major emergency where transporation and/or communication systems would be disrupted and family reunification would be delayed. Our new AlertNow systems also provides enhanced capabilities for communicating quickly and clearly with all RDS families in case of a crisis situation.
Now is a good time to review your own family's emergency preparedness and protocols too.
FEMA has some good online resources to guide you in your planning. Got a GoBag packed in your home and in your car? A 72 hour kit for each family member? Enough water? A phone plan? Spend some time planning together for family and for pets -- your children will appreciate your foresight.
