Redwood Day School cultivates a diverse, inclusive community that engages, prepares, and inspires students to thrive academically, contribute to society, and lead healthy, meaningful lives. — RDS Mission
We are delighted that you are interested in getting to know Redwood Day School, a long-standing independent K-8 school in the heart of Oakland, California. In partnership with our families, Redwood Day School strives to nurture and encourage the best in each and every one of our students. Whether it is a talent for mathematics, writing, art, music, theater, athletics, taking the lead on a sustainability initiative on behalf of one’s community, or harvesting plants for a community garden, we seek to empower our students to pursue their passions and take risks to discover new passions, as they foster a life-long love of learning.
Our rigorous academic curriculum honors the developmental and educational journey of the whole child through the primary and early adolescent years. Redwood Day School students are encouraged to stretch and thrive academically, while at the same time, develop a strong sense of self-awareness as a member of a dynamic community of learners. With enthusiastic and inspired teachers, challenging academics, a spacious and inviting campus, and an intentional connection to the outside world, we engage, prepare, and inspire each other and ourselves.

Our family community represents the rich diversity of the East Bay, with families coming from nearby Oakland neighborhoods, and as far as Berkeley, Alameda, and San Leandro. Forty percent of our students identify as being students of color. Nearly 25% of our students receive financial aid. Classes represent a broad range of learning styles, and teachers provide differentiated instruction to accommodate the variety of learners in their classrooms.
