More RDS Students to attend leadership camp

OAKLAND, CA March 14, 2005 - Getting a chance to attend an eight-week leadership camp in New York is a dream come true for some students, especially when the campers come from all over the world. Redwood Day School, located in Oakland, has now nominated and sent six students to Camp Rising Sun, the latest being Gabby Arca (age 13) and Jeremy Lyons (age 13).

Through a selection process based on intellectual achievement, leadership involvement and individual interests, 60 students from 30 countries come together to further develop their leadership skills, learn about each other’s cultures, take on significant responsibilities in running the camp itself, take part in outdoor experiences which include camping, hiking, canoeing, tennis and soccer, and have opportunities to meet a variety of influential people who visit the camp to instruct these youth in world politics. It is one of the oldest camps in the US having its beginning as a boy’s camp in 1930 in the Hudson River Valley. It has expanded its mission by adding a girl’s camp in 1989 and in 2001 opened a European camp in Denmark.

The eight-week experience is always memorable, but Camp Rising Sun has a vibrant network of 3,500 alumni representing 80 countries who stay connected for much of their life. Camp Rising Sun alumni receive support with their college selection process and are eligible for foundation sponsored college scholarships with many attending Williams College. Redwood Day School is very proud of the students they have sent: Kirstie Mah, Kiana Greene, Richard Cole, Sarah Utterman Merrit, and now Gabby Arca and Jeremy Lyons.
