The Redwood Day School athletic philosophy seeks to enrich the emotional, mental, and physical well-being of all student-athletes.  The program provides the opportunity for as many student-athletes as possible, of varying abilities, to participate and enjoy their involvement while emphasizing values of sportsmanship, teamwork, integrity, commitment and self-discipline.

Middle School is a time when students are testing and expanding the limits of their cognitive, social and physical abilities. There is no better place where all of these come together than on the athletic field. At RDS, students can pursue athletics in our After-School Sports Program. The program has several goals designed to meet the developmental needs of Middle School students:

  • To provide a physical, yet safe, outlet for students who find joy in expressing themselves athletically
  • To teach students about the concepts of teamwork, commitment and perseverance
  • To develop and improve athletic skills and abilities
  • To provide a level of athletic competitiveness that is both developmentally healthy and appropriate
  • To instill a love the game.

RDS student-athletes can play on our co-ed soccer, cross-country, track-and-field and volleyball teams or the boys' and girls' basketball teams. The teams are open to all RDS Middle School students, and there is no cut rule in our program. Students remain academically eligible by maintaining a consistent and positive effort in their classes.

Redwood Day School is in a league with other East Bay Middle Schools. Schools play each other approximately once a week during the sports seasons. Volunteer parent drivers generously spend their time transporting our teams to athletic contests. Over the years, those serving as coaches have been parents, teachers and administrators—everyone who gets involved has a great time working with the kids.
